Exploring Humanity Through Photography, with Kyle Batson

Exploring Humanity Through Photography, with Kyle Batson In-Person / Online

Newton Public Library presents "Exploring Humanity Through Photography," a Fourth Tuesday Photography program with street and travel photographer Kyle Batson.

This is a hybrid program: Attend in person at the library, or click here to sign up for the Zoom Webinar simulcast. Kyle will join us in person.

"My inspiration is a curiosity of the mundane," Kyle writes. "Walking through life can feel boring and routine, the familiar often fails to register our senses at all — so much background noise. But bringing a camera to my eye frames the familiar in a new light. I can freeze one moment where light reflects off of the surface of monotony and the camera performs a wonderful alchemy of transformation of the mundane into something remarkable. Where before there was existence, now there is transcendence. My camera allows me to transform the commonplace into the remarkable. Or perhaps it shows me that it was remarkable all along and just gave me the eyes to see it."

Kyle was born in Wichita in 1984 and has been practicing street photography for the last decade. His work focuses on un-posed and unplanned moments in public spaces throughout the world, whether in the middle of a bustling metropolis or in the forests of Africa. He thrives on finding moments of beauty and joy in a chaotic and messy world. He studied Visual Communication at the University of Kansas and has worked in the software development, marketing, education and design industries.
