Teen Event: International Sign Languages and Deaf People Week with WSU; Create Fingerspelled Name Art! In-Person
Join us for a teen event (ages 10-18) at Newton Public Library during International Sign Languages and Deaf People Week! Wichita State University offers a degree and minor in American Sign Language (ASL). WSU will teach teens about and answer questions about Deaf people and Deaf Culture Sign Language. Registration is required. Monday, September 22nd from 4-5PM in the Intrust room at NPL.
Deaf guest presenters will provide a brief overview of Deaf communities and Sign Languages around the world. Participants will study the similarities and differences between signs in different languages around the world and learn the language rules behind those signs.
Participants will also get a little taste of Deaf Art, and get to make their own by creating art based on the fingerspelling of their own name. They will learn how to fingerspell their name and the rules for reading fingerspelling at the same time with the help of the guest presenters!
